  1. I really like everyones example on sport crisis and how different sport and organizations look after scandals. The one that I think of right now is LSU and their head coach Ed Orgeron having many different girlfriends and their children at practice participating in drills. I felt like LSU was looked at as a powerhouse and class act program now I feel like people are looking down on them. I feel like this is a great example of this.

  2. My alma mater, Jackson State University, experienced a reputational and operational crisis for about 7-8 years before last season. During that time, we had at least 4 coaches. Well the team started losing and has become the laughingstock of the SWAC. We lost recruits, a lot of money as fans stopped coming to games like they once had, and again where we were once respected as a great program, we were at the bottom of the barrel.

The University of Arkansas had a reputational crisis in 2012 when Bobby Petrino had a motorcycle wreck. The University went on record saying that Petrino had a wreck with no other riders. Come to find out, whether they knew or not, Petrino was actually riding the motorcycle with his mistress. This information showed the university to be in a lie, whether purposely or not. This caused a reputational crisis for both Bobby Petrino and the University of Arkansas.

The operational crisis that comes to mind is the Metrodome roof collapse in 2010. There was a blizzard in Minneapolis that dumped over 17 inches of snow. This caused the roof to collapse and make the dome unplayable. The Vikings and NFL then had to figure out if, when, and where the game against the Giants would be played. They eventually settled on Detroit.

  4. The COVID 19 Pandemic has caused an operational crisis for intercollegiate sports programs throughout the country. Personally, in the San Diego Community College District, our sports seasons were cancelled for both 2020 and 2021. This Fall, we are only allowed to practice on campus with masks, vaccination, and COVID Testing. I am hoping that my tennis team will be able to compete in 2022.

Covid has definitely been the cause of varying operational crises in all levels of sports programs over the past couple of years. In my urban public school district, student-athletes went a whole calendar year with no sports activities offered. Sports came back in spring 2021 and slowly schools and teams are recovering. At the same time, many suburban public schools lost little or no playing time due to the pandemic. This has, in my opinion, widened the competitive balance gap between urban and suburban schools even more than they were pre-pandemic. I'm interested to see the long term effects of this. On the professional level, in December 2020, the NBA started a delayed season with no fans in attendance and slowly moved to full capacity as the season and the playoffs progressed. By the end of the finals, it was hard to believe the season started in such a different way. At the end of the day, I think that some organizations will recover and even thrive post-pandemic while others will struggle to stay afloat. Unfortunately, I think it will be the less established and less financially capable organizations that will fall.

  6. the 20-21 season defintely was victim of operational crisis. Our institution choose not to participate in collegiate sports nor did we open the campus back up to students. Being a small private HBCU, this was detrimental to both the athletic department and the university as whole. Student Athletes lost a chance to play before graduating, some where even trying to find a way to prolong graduation because they were granted a their year of eligibility. We also lost recurits that coaches had worked hard to recruit, this was mainly because the institution decided at the last minute or communicated at the last minute the decsion to not reopen the school. Recuits had to either find a school that would allow them to come and play or sit out yet another year.

We are open this year but it has been hard regaining that momentum for our athletics department. Being in TX, in Austin, where we spent most of the Fall semester at cat. 5 regard covid levels, we had sports play but they played to an empty gym or nearly empty field. We are having to condition harder than most season because our athletes have not played in year and for spring sports two years. I hope that our SA dont feel the pressure but rather enjoy being able to play again. Our coaching staff defintely feels the pressure as they are hoping to be as successful as they were two season ago.

  7. One example of a crisis that occurred at a school I went to was the Sandusky scandal. It created a huge operational crisis as the school cleaned house from the president to the AD to the Coach. Then it was a nightmare for the new people that came in and had to deal with the ramifications from being fined to losing scholarships. That was about tenish years ago and still to this day Penn State is feeling the ramifications and those in charge are always under a microscope.

  8. The biggest crisis I am dealing with continues to be the Covid-19 pandemic. We played in the spring with many guidelines on place, but after a year on our student athlete not doing much outside of their home, there was a lot of emotional issues. We, coaches, had to navigate these issues with our players and help bring them back from a very dark place in their lives.

  9. An example of reputation/ operational crises that comes to mind is the Louisiana State University football program and all the mismanagement of all the NCAA violations and assault cases. In 2019, LSU won the College Football National Championship and had arguable, the greatest team and season in college football history. But, to many, all of their accomplishments are outweighed by the unfortunate situations within their football program.

  10. One of the first examples of a reputation crisis that came to mind when reading this week's article is what the Jacksonville Jaguars recently went through with Head Coach Urban Meyer. After a loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, Coach Meyer chose not to take the team flight home and instead spent the night in a bar where he was photographed and videotaped flirting and dancing with a woman that wasn't his wife. According to the "guide to determining appropriate response strategy" in the article, the organization should use "Diminish response strategies". Coach Meyer made an apology tour to the team and organization, but from reports coming from Jacksonville, he has lost the respect of the locker room. Unfortunately, this wasn't Coach Meyer's first time in the spotlight of controversy, so it's a little more difficult to recover from.

I really liked this video because it brought light to a crisis that's been going around for the last decade dealing with active shooters in public places and or schools etc. By watching this video and reading the article, eSports has become very popular in the last couple of years generating millions of dollars. It's sad to say that this was the first active shooter at a major sporting event in Tampa Florida. One thing I have learned from this video and reading the article about the incident is that it is wise at any sporting event to have precautions, such as armed security and a security plans at sporting events to protect the fans and players at the event. This incident has taught me that it is smart to be proactive instead of reactive when dealing with security measures at a sporting event.

  12. I thought that this was very insightful and thought provoking. It was interesting to think of how online gaming and sports need a more proactive approach to security protocols. I think that while the sports industry continues to expand and grow in its reach, it will require additional resources and problem solving that will be help be prepared to deal with the future growth.

  13. The Phoenix Suns are currently being investigated for workplace toxicity and potential racist and sexist activities. This report has definitely thrust them into a reputation crisis. While the investigation still has to be completed by the NBA, we already see the effects of it tarnishing their reputation.

  14. I loved the article and the flowchart that went with it. As I've been watching the Astroworld events unfold from last week's tragedy, I am trying to compare the organizer's response to this reputation and organization crisis with the suggestions in the article.

  15. I like this video because it brings attention to crisis in sports and the interactive dialogue that it creates. the current crisis that comes to mind for me is Jon Gruden sexist, homophobic and transphobic language he used in emails. It ruined his reputation resulting in his resignation. He most likely will never get another head coaching or tv analysis job again.

  18. It was nice to see different examples of crisis within sports. One example I can think of is regarding the USA Women’s Olympic team and their team doctor, Larry Nassar. Larry is currently being tried for abusing about 500 women, over the course of 2 decades. It took the victims many years to speak up for themselves, after a while more victims started coming forward. It’s taken the victims and the team to heal, most are no longer on the team. However, Simone Biles recently came forward as another victim. She currently is one of the most decorate gymnast of all time.

  19. This was a great video. Well done. I think this brings to light some of the different crisis' we can have in a sports environment... Think about Jon Gruden being fired for his comments, SMU's football program during the 80's, conference realignment... There are crisis's everywhere in sport. How we handle said crisis's differentiate a good leader from a poor one. A great crisis management plan is key to avoiding large scale, fireable events tearing your organization down.

  33. This blog was very interesting and the esport community is new to me. Having such laid back rules to enter a tournament is concerning. How the gunman did not get stopped when entering the event makes you wonder about what security measures were being taken. It was also eye opening that this shooting was the first in professional sports. I hope that esports events have better security protocols after this devastating shooting.

  34. A few months ago there was a crisis where many fans were injured at a soccer match in Mexico. Queretaro fans attacked Atlas fans with objects such as chairs and metal poles. The crisis is considered an operational crisis because of lack of security at the stadium but can this example also be a reputational crisis because the owner was forced to sell his team? This crisis not only damaged the image of the team but also the image of Mexican soccer.

  35. This blog post is very good and eye opening. The security measures for the esport events compared to other sporting events is drastically different but why? They both are professional sports and should have security measures that doesn’t allow a gunman to walk in and shoot people. Sport communicators need a a theory to use when a crisis breaks out.

I think when I think of operational crisis the first thing that I think of is the COVID-19 Pandemic. I think that all sports organizations experienced this one at an operational level. Some organizations shut down and didn't return for quite some time. Sports in schools were canceled along with in-person classes. Professional organizations were able to continue operations like the NBA and NHL in "bubble" situations. All without fans. The NFL played a season mostly without fans. In California, Santa Clara County, where the 49ers have their operations, they were not allowed to play. Consequently, they had to move their operations to Arizona just so they could finish out the season. The county shut down their operations in California and did not budge on the matter. Other instances of operations being effected occurred when American teams had to go to Canada but Canada would not allow unvaccinated members of teams into the country, so teams did not have full traveling parties.

A reputational crisis that this reminds me of is the NBA official, Tim Donaghy, who was found to be fixing games and point shaving based on the calls that he was making. An FBI investigation found Donaghy to be making calls or not making calls to influence the outcome of games. The sport was outraged. The NBA faced a huge crisis among the public on whether or not the game they were watching was a real outcome or it was fixed. Officials are an important part of preserving the integrity of the game. They all make mistakes because they are human, but in this case an official was found to be deliberately determining the outcome of a game based on his calls or non-calls.

The SCCT is interesting model that I could see being utilized, but difficult to fully implement because the nature of a crisis is that it is an emergency and they are never the same. It would be difficult to gather data on all crisis situations as well.

Another comment is that Landon's hair is pretty spectacular.

  37. One aspect of this topic that continues to pop up in these discussions is the responsibility of the organizational front offices to protect the players. The Astros and Patriots were mentioned in this blog with their recent and past issues that came to light and negatively impacted everyone involved. It would seem that most blame would fall on the people committing the acts in question. However, the media and fans often place more blame and attention on the front offices and organizational leaders that allowed these actions to not only be carried out but often attempted to cover them up after the fact. You mentioned this very thing happening and in turn, these events become organizational crises.

As someone who is seeking a career in a professional sport team's front office, this opens my eyes to the responsibilities outside of the day to day work involved in the industry. There are a lot of moving parts and complex situations that must be monitored at all times. At the end of the day, ethics matters across the board and at all times. It is everyone's job to uphold these ethical standards. It is not enough to simply not commit the actions yourself. You must be active in limiting as many as possible from occurring under your roof.
